Pavane for the Space Age

The Space Shuttle Atlantis landed for the last time today.

There are no more missions planned, nor plans in the works for a new space program.

We've grounded ourselves with our shortsightedness.

We have, in short, stopped reaching for the stars.

I feel like we've failed the whole human race by giving up like this. Oh, I know that's not really the reason - that there is safety to consider, and cost, and practicality, etc - but that's what it feels like. Like things can only go downhill from here.
