This is my Mecca... or something

50 years ago, my parents weren't even born. The world was in the throws of the Cold War. Only the foolhearty thought of a mission to the stars as anything other than lunacy - a thing for myths and legends, not mortals. But 50 years ago today Yuri Gagarin became the first man to enter space.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

I mean, isn't it a beauiful thing, An amazing thing, that man managed to reach the stars? But we never went to the stars, did we? From 1969-1972, twelve men walked on the Moon. And now, 39 years later, we're winding down our Space Shuttle program and have no plans for anythign to replace it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: last new year's eve I was staying up, waiting for the ball to drop, and I couldn't help but think this is the end of 2010. Fifty years ago, they thought we'd be sending men to Jupiter and beyond. But what have we done? Where are the missions to Mars? Where are the plans to return to the Moon?
