The oldest son of two doctors, one a native Londoner and the other a transplant from Bombay, there was a lot of pressure for James to succeed from an early age. He intially followed in their footsteps, graduating two years early from The Hall School before proceeding to Eton and Cambridge. In this third year, however, his younger brother, who had always chaffed under their parents' expectations, experienced a psychotic break and murdered both their parents before committing suicide. James chose to finish his chemsitry degree, but switched to AOP physics in grad school. He worked for the European Space Agency for ten years before being hired by the SGC, where he was later chosen for the First Atantis Expedition. Following the recovery of the Tria crew, he was almong those who requested to remain in the city.

During the Second Exodus, he took up a teaching position at Columbia University with fellow former First Expedition member Katie Brown. Together they were able to take several base chemicals difficult to obtain in Pegasus with them during the Haegira. He is currently wanted by American authorities for grand larcony and by the British for treason.

Additionally, he has been in a relationship with Athosian Malie Islien since late 2005.
