The Great SyFy Rewatch 2: "Singularity"

Week 4
Stargate: SG-1 "Singularity"
Summary | Transcript | GSFR 1 | SU

A DEFINITION NOT FOUND IN THE DICTIONARY Not leaving: an act of trust and love, often deciphered by children.

Real life has brought delay to the rewatch, but I am back with "Singularity," having skipped "Hathor" quite merrily.

I love how already what little bit of science Jack knows comes with a how did you know that factor. Its not magnets, but it's cool. Especially how Sam seems to realize that, deep down, Jack actually know these things - or, at least, enough not to be totally ignorant. But then again, Big Militrary has never cared much for Science.

Plus, them taking biohazard precautions for the one and only time is worth noting. Though the story of how SG7 came to be on Hanaka and got them to let them build a telescope is a story I want to be told.

I would really like to see more Daniel/Janet. It really doesn't pick up until her final season, admittedly, but I'd like to see it. Also, I wish we could have seen a lot more of Cassandra. But that's what fanfic is for, I guess - the spaces in between. But still, I find I odd they go to all the trouble of building up all this you are our family now for Cassandra and then barely use it. Is it child acting laws, forgetfulness, or something else?

This isn't a bad episode. It's actually quite good the first time around. But I have obviously been jaded by the later seasons, because all I can think of when they're shocking Cassandra is how Capacitors are amazing things, and that by greatly reducing the amount of time it takes to discharge, you can generate an absurd number of jules. And, also, that surgeries are terribly boring in real life, and SG1 seems to capture this somewhat better than other shows.

....Is it sad I'm utterly ambivalent to so much of the drama? All I know is that a goa'uld that other goa'uld think is crazy has to be absolutely batshit. Which, of course, Neriti is, but we don't know that.

I wonder what the random guards assigned to guard that facility think of a whole bunch of adults taking a little girl to the bottom of a mine shaft and leaving her there. I'm sure it's one of those what the frak am I doing with my life moments? Though so much of this episode I, in my pessimistic retrospective, have to wonder was designed to show....

I wonder how much trouble Jack got in with Janet about the dog. And how much of the poking and prodding that he gets later is because of this.

...and this hardly seems to count as analysis, but there's really nothing much here, beyond wishing they'd used Cassandra better in the series.
I was never all that interested in Cassandra, admittedly. Her first episode never really captured me, and her subsequent appearances (not that there have been many. I can only think of one more, where she was a snotty teenager?) haven't really snared my attention either.

Perhaps they never utilized Cassandra more because Janet was the one to take her in, and we rarely see Janet. And when we do, it's almost always in a medical capacity.
There are two: one with Jolinar, one with teenage her. I never really cared for her that much either, but oh the potential her character could have had. An alien child on earth? That merits at least once a season, I would have thought.

But you're probably right. It's just they use her three times and then never again. Either ignore her existence or use her all the time. don't tease us.

How am I going to make an SU for this episode though?
I would watch an entire season of aliens exploring Earth, tbh. I really wanted an episode where Teal'c leaves the Mountain for the first time. An entire episode, just for Teal'c exploring :D Or Teyla and Ronon.

This is the first episode we meet Cassondra, yes? You could explore Janet taking her home for the first time. Or does your SU fics have to focus on SG1? Hmmm....
(nod) There's the ep where Teal'c lives off base for a while... but that's not so good. I'm horrible at writing aliens though, so...

I don't know. I've tried writing it from Casandra's POV, but it's not working so far. I might try something more SG1 centered later.
It's not giving up. You never planned to writ ea fic for EVERY episode. At least, I don't think so~
For every episode I watched. I've been skipping liberally S1. But... ::shrug:: it may make for a cleaner narrative this way.

Anyway, I think I've decided to give a name to the whole Sights Unseen / AJ 'verse continuum, since I consider it all part of one head canon. I think I might call it "Chaos Theory"
