The AJ Theme

I grew up in a home filled with music. I'm not talking piano or other instruments either - no one in my family is particularly musical, though my brother and I both played clarinet in high school - but listening to music. I remember our place in Okinawa being filled with music at all reasonable hours. Dad's record player was still in use in those days, as was his massive stereo system. (Okinawa was also the place where I got my first CD and, I suppose, began my musical independence. The music didn't disappear after that, but it became quieter, regulated to personal CD players and laptops. It stopped being played loud enough for the whole house to hear.)

Lots of this was alternative rock and grunge, which possibly explains my own taste, though over the years it's shifted more towards the soft rock and singer/songwriter end of that spectrum. One of my favourite bands is The Airborne Toxic Event, which I had the chance to see live in concert about two years ago (it remains one of the best I've ever been to). And one of my favourite CD's is their sophomore album, All At Once, which is an almost utterly perfect album from start to finish. And the opening track, "All At Once," which lends its name to the album, is one of my favourite songs still.

Which is one of the many reasons why it's the first track on the Season 1 Soundtrack for the AJ 'Verse, and in many ways I consider the song a theme for the whole series. I include its youtube video and lyrics below.

We were born without time
Nameless in the arms
Of a mother, a father, and God
When the world would wait for us
A thousand years in the crush
Of our eyes, fearless, in awe
So quietly, we'd fade into sleep
With nothing on our mind

Hoo, hoo, hoo~

And then we long to be loved
In the rush, we become
Some things we thought we'd never be
We were surprised by our heart
Left weary and scarred
By the nights spent feeling incomplete
And all those evenings swearing at the sky
Wishing for more time
All the promises we broke when we tried
Just wastin' our time

Hoo, hoo

We get old all at once
And it comes like a punch
In the gut, in the back, in the face
When it seems someone cried
And our parents have died
Then we hold onto each other in their place
And I feel the water risin' around us
Maybe that's okay
Yeah, I feel the world changin' all at once
I guess it'll be okay

Hoo, hoo, hoo

And we all had one hope
There was someone lookin' down
When we return our bodies to each other
And the ground

:D yay!

They really are one of my favourite bands, even if I don't really care for their other two CDs all that much.
Sometimes that happens. Often, I find a song I really really like by an artist, and then I don't care for their other music.
(nod) There are one or two songs on their other albums I REALLY LOVE, but the rest are just, mewh.
