The Great SyFy Rewatch: Day 42

Day 42 / 237 Days Until I Ship

Today was "Travelers" and "Tabla Rasa."

Today was also one of those days where a scene I'm trying to write isn't working at all the way I wanted, so I'm just going to go to bed here in a min and take a stab at it again tomorrow.

But the episodes. "Travelers" is one of those episodes that's more or less brilliant, once you discount the odd romance the writer's are obviously trying to go for between John and Larrin. Honesly, the woman kidnapped him, tortured him, and pretty much was not that friendly the entire time. That's not UST. That's basically trying to set him up with a slightly-less-creepy-but-still-psycho version of Kolya. Which is creepy in and of itself. But, other than that, wonderful, though I really wish they could've gotten the battleship.

And "Tabla Rasa" is just amazing. The scene where Lorne and his men corner John and Ronon as they're getting out of the jumper and John's orders are for them to do whatever Ronon says? That's just classic. And Zelenka being able to evade the soldiers like that? IDK if I believe the idea of him having military training, but the timeline would fit for him to be part of the Velvet Revolution. Which is an idea I love so much. - And, for the record, this is actually another episode where I don't want to strangle Keller. I find it odd I feel the need to point this out. But I do.

Random thoughts include: 1) Even if McShep wasn't my OTP of choice, nothing in the world could make me believe in John/Larrin. Nothing. Like I said, thinking about it, it'd basically be like John/Kolya, which makes me kinda nauseated just typing. *Shudders*. 2) They try to hide it well, but you can tell Rachel's pregnant long before they work it into the script. 3) I'm actually starting to miss John's let's be friends speaches from S1&S2. Granted, I love it when the series goes dark, but it's kinda like the passing of an era, isn't it? 4) My parents are coming down for a couple days tomorrow. FunFunFun.

It's just recently come to my attention that there was a post over at the welovezelenka comm where fans were listing supporting evidence of Zelenka being part of the military/resistance fighter. I kind of love the idea too :P

And, for the record, this is actually another episode where I don't want to strangle Keller. I find it odd I feel the need to point this out. But I do.

Not weird at all - it makes sense to me. The ratio of episodes where I want to strangle Keller and the ones where I don't...well, there's a big difference between the two. which makes the episodes where I don't want to knock her upside her head all the more special.

I agree, John/Larrin does nothing for me, even if you leave aside the kidnapping and torture. Some people view Larrin as more of a female!Sheppard character - willing to do what it takes to help her people. But I can't get over the kidnapping and torture, so John/Larrin fics are just...no.
True, I can kinda see Larrin as a female!Sheppard of sorts - but John never goes to the extremes she does, even with their Wraith prisoners. (Well, "Miller's Crossing" might be the exception for that, but you generally get my point).

Ah, Keller. It's like the writers only ever had 3 good ideas for her and then just started using her whenever they needed a "throwaway" character for an episode because she was too pretty to ignore, or something.
I can see similarities between the two. But whatever traits she and John share, hers are sort of...taken to an extreme. I haven't seen that episode in forever, so I can't comment about the kiss - was John just trying to manipulate her?

I think someone amongst TPTB had a huge crush on Jewel Staite, and when they brought her onto the show they wanted to use her for every bit they could get, so they started giving her every scene they could, consistency be damned.
She was definatley trying to manipulate him... John, well, he'd have been equally oblivious even if she weren't.

amen sister
If Radek is close in age to David Nykl then it's possible he was called up to serve in the military, since there was National service in Czechoslovakia at the time he turned 18.

At the time of the Velvet Revolution he might have been a student, but there is an equally good case that he was still serving in the military at the time.

IDK. It's possible he was in the military, but given the state of the cold war at the time and the fact that Czechosolvakia was behind the Iron Curtain, I'm inclinded to think he was a student at the time. After all, they needed scientists to build bombs, and Zelenka *does* know how to build a nuke...

Though I am highly enamoured of the idea of Zelenka being part of the "underground" before the revolution. Just, so very much so. (Maybe he could've even been both? A soldier working for the underground? Oh, I'm going to have to wikipedia this....)
Um, you do realise that the "Revolution" was actually a series of peaceful student demonstrations and strikes, not a military coup?

I'm not sure what sort of "underground" there would have been prior to this, but it was probably more of a political movement than an army of freedom fighters.

I think you're getting mixed up with the Czech resistance movement from the second world war?

I prefer the theory Radek did a short period of military service, left to go to university and got involved in a political movement that eventually sparked a series of peaceful demonstrations against the government.

I know it's not as romantic as the other theory, but fits better with what I've read.
Um, you do realise that the "Revolution" was actually a series of peaceful student demonstrations and strikes, not a military coup?

Yeah, I do. But the idea struck me as I was writing my response and, well, I got carried away. Though if you give me enought time I'm sure I can find evidence of an "underground" of some sort for him to be part of. Just because I really do like that idea, despite it's lack of logic.

But I'm a romantic at heart. Or fuzzy-hearted mistanthrope. Either way, serious wikiapedia-ing is nessicary to create the perfect Zelenka background for my head!cannon.

I've been doing some more research and I have compiled a list of events in the history of the Czech Republic, with suggestions on how Radek might have been affected by this, which I'll post on my blog for you.

Hopefully this will give you a solid framework on which to base your head cannon.
thank you very much. Whereas I've managed to figure out head!cannon's for most every other character (even Teldy), I've not managed to figure one out for Zelenka yet. Thanks so much!
