Carrier commentary

So, I've been watching this tv documentary series called Carrier, which is about life aboard the USS Nimitz during it's deployment to the Persian Gulf and Pacific coast in 2005.

First of all, let me say that some of the enlisted folks they chose to interveiw were doozies, but for the most part it was a good series. The first episode, "All Hands," was particularly good, and the third, "Super Secrets," had it's moments. (For anyone interested, the job I'll be doing in the Navy is discussed about 12 min into this episode.)

I particuarly like that they were very truthful about it, and didn't really screen anything for any political agenda. Very fair balance between the left and the right - very cinema verite. I also like that they included the lead up to and the fall-out from what may or may not have been consentual sex between a E-6 and an E-3 (though I, for one, believe from the sound of it that the femal sailor was too drunk to properly give consent from the sound of it). It's a very unfortunate and very unflattering reality, but it is reality, and I like that they didn't just cut it out to make things seem happier/better/whatever else it was.

For the most part, though, it was slightly too long and slightly too maudlin. And some of the episodes, well, I could've just done without. But it's an interesting look into Navy life.
