A Real Life Rant

I have never been so disgusted with my state as I am at this moment.

In fact, I think I might actually be physically ill. They passed the stupid marriage ban in my state.

I mean, honestly, why? What do these people have to be scared of? What is so wrong with two people who love each other wanting to marry, regardless of gender? Honestly, can someone tell me why? A reason. Any reason.

But there's not one, is there? It's just narrow-mindedness and bigotry and...

I'm not surprised, though. Not really. I know this god-awful place I live in. They play gospel music in Subway, and there are a total of 8 churches on the 2mile strech of road that counts as my town's main street - 24 within the city limits, which, by the way, hold less than 2,000 people.

As the great Frank Herbert says in Dune Messiah: "When law and duty are one, united by religion, you never become fully conscious, fully aware of yourself. You are always a little less than an individual.”

Just remember - It Gets Better.

Honestly - one day you too will be able to live in a country as enlightened as mine (neener, neener?). Ignoring all our rednecks and politicians of course.

We'll get there. We just have to keep up the fight.
Yeah, I know. But my state went Blue last presidential election, so I was naive enough to actually kind of hope we'd rise above this sort of thing.

Le sigh.
My mom says you just have to remember that old, white men have always needed to put someone else down to feel better about themselves (I say they're compensating), and this too shall pass. Hopefully it won't take 40 years. I don't want to move to Yankee-land where it's always cold.
True. But today's young rednecks will be tomorrows wasps, and so nothing will ever really change.

Le sigh
I was really surprised that the margin was so high. It'd been trending down, and the last poll I saw was like 54 to 45 or something like that. When I saw the final numbers in above 61%, I was shocked.

But it does truly get better. Or rather, it eventually will. I was lucky enough to be invited to a marriage equality gathering by the Mayor of Portland, Oregon that reinvigorated me. We'll pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and move forward. Because we can, and we must.

I think Mia Farrow said it best in her tweet: Oh North Carolina - the disappointment we feel now is nothing compared to the bewilderment & shame your children will feel
Well, even the other original 12 colonies thought NC was a backwater. I suppose consitancy is something, at least.

I don't suppose Vegas is starting to take bets on how long this takes to be repealed?
OMG!!! A TRAFFIC REPORTER here in BC just came out w/ the best quote ever!

"So in some US states you can marry your cousin but you just can't marry your gay cousin."

ROTFLMAO - That's just so... true!
OMG. That *is* the best quote ever.

My roommate's parents my freshman year of high school were second cousins. And that roommate was definately a little... off.
